For those of the LDS faith, our semi-annual General Conference is right around the corner. Tonight we talked a little bit about it at Family Home Evening. We read Doctrine & Covenants 1:38 "What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken... whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same." We know that the prophet speaks to us for Heavenly Father. I am trying to help my kids understand that this is a special time to prepare to hear important things that our Father in Heaven wants us to know and do.
For those of you who have kids, I saw a cute idea on the Sugardoodle Conference Packet (taken from The Friend, Oct 2007). It suggests that you get a bunch of different snacks and treats like jelly beans, fruit loops, pretzels, nuts, licorice, etc. and assign a topic to each snack. (You could even just get one pack of jelly beans and assign a color to each topic). To help the children pay attention, each time one of the following words is said, they can eat the assigned snack. I thought it was pretty good. The excitement might wear off by the time the 2nd session comes... but maybe if you have different treats/snacks for each session, it will keep them going??? Thought I would share now so that those of you who want to do it can prepare ahead of time. Heres the topics they suggest using:

Just know that you need to have LOTS of whatever snack you assign for "Jesus Christ"!!! I am really looking forward to Conference. I have been reading the report from October 2008 General Conference this week and there is so much that I have forgotten. I love reading it over again and learning new things. There are things that apply to me now that did not seem quite so poignant the first time around. I find that I must have a highlighter close by so that I can remember those things that jump out at me. Here's a few:

I am so thankful for the inspired words of these leaders. I find them uplifting, motivating, and hopeful. They give me strength to get through the trials and experiences of my life. They make me believe in myself. They help me to have more faith and focus on the important things in life.

My kids love the oldie but goodie -bingo. It is so funny I have brought out different games and activities but they just love bingo. This is a good idea I think I will try too.
I love General Conference too. I am so grateful that we have a chance to listen to our prophet and other leaders and to strengthen our faith. Thanks for the tips!

I have been looking forward to General Conference for 6 months. (We missed in October due to Andy's sister's wedding. ) Thank you so much for the info on conference packets. My kids love them. :)

I love the quote by Elder Wirthlin so much. I have really had to make a consious effort to replace grumbling with a better alternative. I've really noticed a difference in my life and that of my childrens. I'm really looking forward to this conference.

I gotta say, I don't know what to think about that Sugardoodle packet, I mean identifying whether the speaker is bald, holding a cane, in a wheel chair, or wearing glasses? Talk about your "interesting" things to get your kids to focus on during conference! :)
Staci (Brian), I agree with you about that one conf. packet. The one thing I like from that one is the snack idea. The other pages seem kind of a waste unless the kids are older. My fav is the one with all the word searches, codes, and nursery-aged coloring. I think it's the first option.
